Often referred to as the “Eye of God,” its large apparent size and intricate structure make it one of the most studied examples of a dying Sun-like star.

The Helix Nebula represents the final evolutionary stages of a star similar in mass to our Sun. As the star exhausted its nuclear fuel, it expelled its outer layers into space, forming an expanding shell of gas. The remaining hot core—destined to become a white dwarf—emits intense ultraviolet radiation that ionizes the surrounding material, causing it to glow prominently in hydrogen and oxygen emission lines.

What appears as a simple ring is actually a complex, three-dimensional structure composed of multiple shells and filaments. The inner region is dominated by high-energy oxygen emission, giving rise to the blue hues, while the outer regions show hydrogen emission in red. Embedded throughout the nebula are thousands of cometary knots—dense clumps of gas with tails pointing away from the central star—shaped by radiation and stellar winds.

This image was created using narrowband H-alpha and OIII data acquired from Arnold, CA between October 11 and November 3, 2018, with a total integration time of 20.3 hours. The use of narrowband imaging enhances the contrast between different ionization regions, revealing the layered structure and subtle filamentary details within the nebula while minimizing the effects of light pollution.

NGC 7293, commonly known as the Helix Nebula, is one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, located at a distance of approximately 650 light-years in the constellation Aquarius.
