LDN 1622 is a prominent dark nebula located in the constellation Orion at an approximate distance of 1,500 light-years. It is part of a larger complex of interstellar dust and gas associated with the Orion molecular cloud region. Unlike emission nebulae, LDN 1622 does not produce its own light, but instead appears as a silhouette against a background of ionized hydrogen gas, where dense dust absorbs and obscures the underlying emission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure of LDN 1622 is defined by irregular, high-opacity dust clouds embedded within a broader field of H-alpha emission. The nebula exhibits complex boundaries with sharp transitions between opaque regions and illuminated gas, revealing variations in density within the interstellar medium. The surrounding emission, energized by nearby massive stars in Orion, provides a luminous backdrop that enhances the contrast and visibility of the dark nebula. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This image was created using broadband LRGB data combined with narrowband H-alpha acquired from Arnold, CA. The data were collected between December 5, 2023 and February 13, 2024, with a total integration time of 22.93 hours .
