SNR G206.9+2.3

Located in the constellation Monoceros, SNR G206.9+2.3 is one of the faintest Galactic supernova remnants accessible to amateur astrophotographers. Although it lies only a few degrees from two of the winter sky’s most celebrated objects—the Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237) and the Christmas Tree Cluster (NGC 2264)—it is rarely photographed because of its extremely low surface brightness. Revealing its intricate network of shock fronts required 42 hours of exposure collected over multiple nights under the dark skies of the Sierra Nevada.

The image combines 20 hours of hydrogen-alpha (Hα) data with 20 hours of doubly ionized oxygen (OIII) data to reveal the remnant’s complex structure. A small amount of RGB data was added to produce more natural star colors while preserving the faint narrowband emission. The brilliant blue filaments trace oxygen atoms energized by the expanding shock wave from a stellar explosion that occurred many thousands of years ago, while the orange-red emission records hydrogen gas throughout the surrounding interstellar medium.

SNR G206.9+2.3 is believed to be an evolved supernova remnant whose blast wave has been slowing as it interacts with gas and dust between the stars. The delicate lace-like filaments visible throughout the shell are regions where the shock front encounters material of varying density, creating the intricate overlapping arcs that characterize this remarkable object. Imaging such faint structures requires not only long integration times, but also careful processing to preserve the remnant’s subtle detail while maintaining a natural appearance.
